Recognition of a foreign divorce judgment is a legal proceeding through which a foreign decision becomes effective within the territory of the Slovak Republic.
Where a marriage has been dissolved in another EU Member State (excluding Denmark), the decision is generally accepted on the basis of an official translation into Slovak and a standardized EU certificate, without requiring a separate judicial recognition procedure.
For decisions originating from third countries, a petition for recognition must be submitted to the Regional Court in Bratislava, which holds exclusive jurisdiction for these proceedings across the entire territory of the Slovak Republic—unless the state concerned has concluded a bilateral legal assistance treaty with the Slovak Republic (such as Ukraine) that provides for a different or simplified recognition regime.
For non-EU states, it is also necessary to ensure higher authentication of the judgment (Apostille or superlegalization) and its official sworn translation into the Slovak language (with the exception of documents in the Czech language).
Recognition is essential, in particular, for registering the change of marital status in the Special Registry (osobitná matrika). Our firm provides comprehensive legal advisory and representation in preparing petitions for the recognition of foreign divorce judgments, securing necessary authentications, and handling subsequent communications with the registry office.
