A change of a minor child’s given name or surname constitutes a matter of essential importance which, although standing outside the formal scope of parental rights and responsibilities, falls within the decision-making authority of both parents regardless of which parent holds physical custody. In the event of disagreement between the parents, the court decides in ordinary proceedings by issuing a judgment. A change of given name or surname is not considered a matter to be adjudicated via an interim measure, as its inherent nature generally lacks the urgency required to justify a temporary arrangement of the child's affairs. Our firm provides legal advisory and representation for parents in proceedings concerning changes to a minor’s name and surname.
