Parents manage the assets of a minor child, but for substantial property transactions (e.g. selling or encumbering real estate, dealing with savings, accepting or refusing an inheritance) they must decide jointly, and every such transaction must be approved by a court. Without court approval, the legal act is ineffective and does not produce the intended legal consequences. If the interests of the parent and the child conflict, the court appoints a conflict-of-interest guardian (kolízny opatrovník) for the child for the given transaction.

Under the Slovak Family Act, the management of a minor child's assets is an integral part of parental rights and duties. Its main purpose is the protection, as well as the effective and rational use, of the assets belonging to the child.
The legislation strictly distinguishes between the types of property transaction involved. The assessment depends on the specific circumstances and the overall nature of the case:
The category of transactions exceeding the scope of ordinary management includes, in particular:
The court's approval function is a form of preventive control and acts as a guarantee that the transaction is in the best interests of the child.
No parent may represent their child in transactions involving a conflict of interest between the parent and the child, or between several children of the same parents (§ 31(2) of the Slovak Family Act).
The mandate of the conflict-of-interest guardian is strictly limited in time and purpose to the specific transaction (e.g. signing a purchase or pledge agreement) and automatically ends the moment the assigned task is completed.
